The Engarde Project was craeted in 2000 as an independent experimental seminar on the political economy of contemporary art and design. The practical objective of the seminar was to stimulate inquiry into the nature of contemporary visual culture and its relation to politics and economics. In different times it was housed by The American University of Paris, Parsons Paris School of Design, Quang Gallery and the First Art Corporation. The first Engarde experience was such a success that the experiment was repeated the following year and then turned into an annual workshop. In 2002, the Engarde Project began inviting artists, critics, designers, and curators to share their experiences and ideas with the students. The first Engarde guest was Jerome Sans, curator and co-director of the Palais de Tokyo participated in the Engarde conference "The Political Dimension of the Identity of Art" hosted by the American University of Paris in October 2002. The next year Engarde invited Joseph Kosuth. Between 2002 and 2007, Engarde conference series featured Joseph Kosuth, Orlan, Erik Boulatov, Seamus Ferrell, Yuris Lesnik, French Vogue editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld, Louis Vuitton's creative director and designer Marc Jacobs, photographers Paolo Roversi and Lee Mayr, fashion designer Adeline Andre, international curators Evelyne Jouanneau and Cecile Bourne, film producer Anthony Anderson and many others. In 2003, the Engarde Project collaborated with the Paris Quang Gallery in organizing Alexandre Borodouline's photographic exhibit "The Last Beach." In 2004, the Engarde Project was involved in setting up a joint Parsons Paris/AUP conference "Media, Politics and Fashion." The Engarde Project also produced four Engarde shows that presented the works of young and upcoming European and American artists.
